how i got here

My spiritual journey started very much the same as most of my fellow millennials: by watching Charmed, The Craft, Practical Magic and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. These stories represented the fantasy element of a spiritual energy I've felt most of my life.

I was raised "catholic," like most Mexicans, which meant we didn't actually followed the religion, but were in church for things like weddings and baptizes (or as we like to call them: excuses to party). Still, I was encouraged to pursue my own spirituality, which I did.

I wanted to learn whatever I could about spirituality and mysticism. I heard out the catholics, but the institution and I didn't see eye to eye. I learned some curanderismo from my dad and about my weird dreams that saw the future from my mom. I was forming my own beliefs and witchcraft kept calling me.

These wants and needs started to materialize in my art in the form of a fantasy world and a novel. My initial research covered physics and astronomy, astrology and mythology, history and philosophy. But my academic researcher brain knew that I needed to reach out to actual spiritual practitioners.

That's where Facebook groups came in handy. There were dozens of online communities sharing these interests, not just the aesthetic but the practical elements. However, much like most of the online resources I could find, these groups were based on Wicca and practices stemming from European cultures, which didn't resonate with me.

Eventually, I found one that was more oriented towards decolonization, marginalized identities and folk magic from historically oppressed groups. Here's where I found a bunch of friends, we taught each other about our cultures and learned together about spiritual practices. The magic I was searching was already surrounding me.

At this time, I remained an academic (had to put my degree to work), but an encounter with Death pushed me to start practicing. After I was shot at during a failed carjacking, I wanted justice, but knew the system was going to let me down. So, I took to witchcraft. I went to my local mystical shop, got some stuff and poured my heart into a ritual that took a couple of weeks. And it worked! The day after finishing it, I received the update that they had caught the guy that attacked me (for a different, heavier crime) and he was behind bars. Justice in my town is quite literally a miracle, so I was sold on witchcraft.

I leaned into my knowledge of medicinal plants and my extremely vivid dreams, and went on a spiritual journey that coincided with my Saturn return. My practice developed into one based on nature, Mexican folk magic and science, because what is magic if not science we don't understand yet?

One of the most important callings for me turned out to be the most natural and terrifying thing for most humans: Death. It didn't surprise me, after all, my people have a very healthy relationship with this concept.

My lifelong goth and macabre â€‹interests were signs of how comfortable I felt in the dark. Death is the one unavoidable thing, it's what makes life worth living. And while it's sad to see those we love go, seeing Death as a villain does a disservice to our nature.

Now, I'm not saying it's not scary, but making peace with Death helped me see my path ahead. I stopped fearing spiders and started working with them, now they're my friends. And I vowed to be there for my community as a death worker.

I work with people through loss, grief and transformation. Not only in situations of literal death of the body, but also in breakups, difficult transitions and spiritual journeys. These are moments that often feel lonely because they're uncomfortable and it's too easy to turn the other way, specially when it's not happening to you. But these are the same moments when we need others the most.

That's the core of my practice, being there when things get dark. And I mean that in all the sense of the word, whether we're looking at skeletons in the closet or talking about deep feelings and mysticism. Scary things don't seem so scary when you have support.
